i have had a power loss problem for a few months now, before i disconected the maf sensor the engine only gave half the revs. when i disconected it a difference in power was evident. Today i removed the maf sensor and cleaned the thing out using a cotton bud nothing else on the two wires, a lot of dirt came off. Then used a blow down gun, proceeded to blow out the dirt from inside the housing. when i reconected it, it gave me half the revs again but after reving the tits off it it gave me the other half of the revs. i took on the local highway to try it out it still does not give the performance that it did when i first bought it (two years ago)! and when i turn it off it gives the same half revs every time?????? can anyone help???

is it the maf or not? or could it be something else? i used to own a sierra cosworth before the galaxy so i never ever thought of it as 'fast' but it did seem to 'pull on' between 2000 and 3000 revs significantly faster than today, again when the maf is disconected it is faster... what could it be? help!

It is the first thing on the pipe after the air-filter box top, it has a multi-plug plugged in, you can't miss it.

This is what it looks like on my Tdi...

Step 1. Squeeze the clip on the plug and pull....

Step 2. Unfortunately I havent got a photo of me using a pair of pliers to open the rear clip to detach the pipe at the rear of the sensor, but I hope you get the idea....

....missing photo!.......

Step 3. Use an allen key to remove the two bolts at the front...

Step 4. Pull the Maf away from the air filter box...

The power has been rubbish on my 1999 110 Tdi recently so reading up on things here I decided it sounds like it must need a new MAF.

GSF had new ones only

Excellent pictures, you could teach 'Haynes' a thing or two !

Trouble is today when I got my new MAF the other wire that comes out of the 5 pin plug with some sort of (temperature?) sensor on it is dangling in the air and I cant see where it is supposed to go. Doesnt seem to worry the Gal at the moment but I havent been far in her yet. Can anyone give me a hint?

Don't worry, it doesnt go anywhere....there is a clip on the lh bulkhead but it might of dropped off.

yes you can..you need to protect the gold thingies on the plug though so they dont get covered in muck.

Ours was disconnected 4 months till we remembered to get a new one!

Have disconnected MAF and car is performing much better!

You state that leaving it disconnected will not cause any problems, therefore is it worth spending the money to replace the MAF? will I get even better performance with a new MAF connected then running with faulty MAF disconnected?

In the short term it will be fine, but as MO4 found out, when you fit the new one you will wonder why you waited!
